Mid-Term Elections

This mid-term election could mark a turning point in American politics. Polls are showing that the Republicans will lose control of both houses of Congress. The main reason given for this trend is dissatisfaction with the Bush Administration especially on the war in Iraq.

The reports coming from Iraq each day paint a dismal and painful picture. Not only do American troops continue to die, but the country has sunken into a bloody chaos with hundreds of Iraqi citizens dying each week. It has become very clear that the goals of the Bush Administration are not being met.

The Administration’s declared goals of bringing democracy, stability and safety to Iraq are failing. The American soldiers who have lost their lives in this war may have been sacrificed in vain. More and more voters are becoming aware of this and their trust in those who forced this war is dwindling.

The fear of being targeted by terrorist and the desire to live in safety have persuaded voters to support a war that they believed would protect them from terrorists. This belief is deteriorating and many are beginning to believe that this war will turn into another quagmire for the U.S. The support is diminishing. A recent poll shows that less than 35 percent of Americans still approve of the war.

This alone may not defeat the Republicans in the November elections. More and more leading Republican representatives and senators have become involved in numerous scandals. Foley, Ney and Weldon have all damaged the Republican efforts not to lose control of Congress.

Although the signs point to a change of power in Washington, there is plenty of reason for this not to happen. The Republicans still have many means of influencing the outcome. The financial strength of the GOP is immense. They also have enjoyed and continue to enjoy the support of powerful corporations. They also know very well how to play the fear joker. One should also not forget the tactic used in Bush’s presidential election in states such as Florida and Ohio. Striking eligible voters from lists and causing excessively long lines at poll stations are just a few.

This election may put a stop to the Bush Administration’s free ride. It may also just be another surprise election where the Republican candidates prevail against all odds.
